Amino acids are the basic building blocks of all proteins. Individual amino acids are linked via the peptide bond to form long chains, which can be made up of several hundred to a thousand individual amino acids. Chains of less than 100 amino acids are called peptides and longer chains are called proteins. In the body, proteins take on important functions in structure building, the musculoskeletal system and energy metabolism.
